The Red Cross are advising parents to attend first aid courses after revealing shocking new research.

More than Four out of five (81%) in the region say they wouldn’t be confident, willing – or know how to take the correct action – in the event of a baby choking.

The research also showed just over a third (38%) had never attended a first aid course.

Luckily Chester father-of-two Ugo Eboh had taken part in such training as his son started choking after swallowing a 20p coin in 2015.

Ugo acted quickly, turning Reuben on his front, before giving him a couple of firm back blows to encourage the coin to dislodge.

He’s calling for parents to learn first aid: “It doesn’t matter how prepared and cautious you are, with children you need to be ready to deal with first aid scenarios at the drop of a hat. I would definitely recommend that parents learn first aid.

“Sometimes you might think that you won’t recall everything you’ve learnt, but actually when it comes to the crunch, the knowledge is there.”
